Chat GPT and Assessment: A case study.

November 2024

A case study of a negotiated/emergent syllabus with A1 learners online.

This webinar was recorded at the IATEFL Themes event 2024 and is a repeat of the talk given at IATEFL Brighton 2024.

In this talk, Shaun looks at how he used Chat GPT with varying levels of success (and failure!) to create bespoke assessments (formative and summative) for an online langauge course.

Much has been made of the potential Chat GPT holds for the reactive teacher. This talk aims to extend the possibilities it presents for materials design to also include assessment materials for both formative and summative assessment.

While Chat GPT is a useful tool in creating material quickly, it also needs clear guidance to ensure that sound pedagogical and assessment principles are followed. This talk will attempt to show how teachers can make use of the tool to save time without abandoning fundamental principles of good learning and assessment.

We’ll begin with a case study, showing how assessment was integrated into a course where a lexicogrammatical language syllabus was not pre-set. The course was an online, synchronous course taught by the presenter. We had 20 beginner - elementary learners from Panama attending an a course in preparation for an extended period of study in Edinburgh, Scotland. No coursebook was used, since none really catered to the specific group needs of these students in terms of their geographical location at the time nor in the future. In short, the topics covered and varieties of English used did not fit their needs.

We will outline the process used to create tests based on emerging language needs of these students. We will share successes and failures within this process and show the material that was created using Chat GPT. We will consider how such assessments align with good principles of assessment and of learning.
